The Victorian Ball in Art

The images on this page represent artist renditions of the Victorian Ball.  When possible the artist and the year the painting was made are given. These paintings and illustrations are useful in helping us to grasp the “feel” and look of a Victorian Ball.

Too Early by James Tissot  1873

Using humor Tissot portrays unfashionably early guest milling about before the ball. Notice the two people peeking through the door. These are some beautiful examples of 1870s ball gowns. Click on the image to open a larger image.
